Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

Benefits

Each spring, up to five Brown sophomores are selected to embark on the two-year fellowship experience starting in the summer after their sophomore year.

Fellowship Benefits

Once selected, MMUF fellows can expect to engage with or receive:

Undergraduate Research
Each Fellow conducts independent research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, under the guidance of a Brown faculty member, for the duration of their fellowship.
Cohort Community
Fellows meet regularly as a cohort at Brown and regionally, and with graduate students, alumni and faculty for pre-professional development workshops, conferences and other activities.
Faculty and Staff Mentoring
Fellows work closely with faculty members in their chosen disciplines and receive additional guidance from Brown's Mellon Faculty Advisory Board and program staff.
Financial Support
Fellows who remain in good standing with the program receive summer and semester stipends to conduct research for the duration of the program, and up to $10,000 in undergraduate or graduate school loan repayment.

* The Mellon Mays Fellowship may not be combined with other funding from a Brown University department or fellowship, such as Annenberg, Cogut, Pembroke, Royce, Stone Initiative, UTRA or SPRINT, although students may participate in more than one fellowship so long as funding is only received from one program. Part-time employment positions or unfunded opportunities that align with the Fellow's research project are acceptable on a case by case basis. Mellon Mays Fellowship recipients are encouraged to use their semester and summer stipends, as well as Scholarly Development Funds and Research Funds, to support related activities during the semesters and summers between sophomore and junior year, and junior and senior year. Please consult with Dr. Poloma about any potential conflicts.
