Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

Benefits

Each spring, up to five Brown sophomores are selected to embark on the two-year fellowship experience starting in the summer after their sophomore year.

Fellowship Benefits

Once selected, MMUF fellows can expect to engage with or receive:

Undergraduate Research

Each Fellow conducts independent research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, under the guidance of a Brown faculty member, for the duration of their fellowship.

Cohort Community

Fellows meet regularly as a cohort at Brown and regionally, and with graduate students, alumni and faculty for pre-professional development workshops, conferences and other activities.

Faculty and Staff Mentoring

Fellows work closely with faculty members in their chosen disciplines and receive additional guidance from Brown's Mellon Faculty Advisory Board and program staff.

Financial Support

Fellows in good standing receive summer and semester stipends for the duration of the program, along with an additional $10,000 in undergraduate or graduate school loan repayment.

Fellows are expected to use their semester and summer stipends, Scholarly Development Funds, and Research Funds (totaling $10,600 in annual funding) to support their academic activities throughout the two-year fellowship.

Fellowship Restrictions

MMUF funding cannot be combined with other Brown University stipends or fellowships (including Annenberg, Bonner, Cogut, Pembroke, Presidential Scholars, Royce, Social Innovation, SPRINT/UTRA, Stone Initiative) during the same period. The list of restricted fellowships is not exhaustive. It is your responsibility to proactively discuss any potential funding conflicts or external opportunities with Dr. Poloma to ensure compliance with program policies.

Fellows may participate in multiple research programs or fellowships, provided they only receive funding from one source at a time.

Part-time employment or unfunded opportunities are permitted if they align with your MMUF research and do not impede your progress toward MMUF goals.
